- 01Wedding PhotographersWedding photography is the largest and most competitive category in South Africa, and also the one where the gap between the cheapest and the most expensive shooter is widest. A full day in the Cape Winelands with a two-person team, an engagement shoot and an album sits in a very different bracket to four hours at a Highveld farm venue with digital delivery only. What you are actually paying for is time on the day, a second shooter, editing hours, and the insurance of someone who has worked your venue before.143
- 02Elopement PhotographersElopements have grown fast in South Africa, helped by mountain, coastal and bushveld locations that need no styling at all. An elopement photographer works differently to a wedding photographer: fewer people, more walking, more weather, and a much larger share of the day spent on portraits. Many double as informal guides who know which Cape Peninsula or Drakensberg spots have permits, parking and good late light.15
- 03Engagement PhotographersEngagement or couple shoots are usually the first time people work with a photographer, and for many couples they double as a trial run before booking the same person for the wedding. They are short, typically 60 to 90 minutes, and location matters more than equipment.27
- 04Family PhotographersFamily photography in South Africa is mostly outdoors and mostly late afternoon, which is why good family photographers guard the golden hour and book two sessions a day at most. The skill is less technical than behavioural: getting a three-year-old and a grandparent comfortable in the same frame within forty minutes.79
- 05Newborn PhotographersNewborn sessions are booked before the birth and shot in the first two weeks, when babies still curl naturally and sleep deeply. This is one of the few categories where safety and hygiene genuinely matter, and where a specialist is worth paying for over a generalist.22
- 06Maternity PhotographersMaternity shoots are usually done between 28 and 34 weeks. In South Africa they are frequently combined with a newborn package at a lower total price, which is worth asking about even if you have not decided yet.35
- 07Kids and Birthday Party PhotographersBirthday and children's event photography is documentary work under difficult conditions: fast movement, mixed lighting, and parents who want both candid coverage and a usable group shot. Coverage is usually two to three hours.0
- 08Matric Dance PhotographersMatric dance photography is a distinctly South African category with a compressed season, roughly August to October, when the good photographers book out. Most shoots happen at the pre-dance gathering at a home or garden venue before the couple leaves, and some photographers offer a separate styled session.10
- 09Graduation PhotographersGraduation photography splits into two jobs: the ceremony itself, often locked to an official photographer, and the family session afterwards on campus. The second is where independent photographers work, and it is worth booking because official ceremony photos are usually the weaker of the two.8
- 10Corporate Event PhotographersCorporate event photography covers conferences, launches, awards evenings, year-end functions and team days. It is judged on turnaround and reliability more than artistry: the marketing team usually needs usable images the next morning.61
- 11Conference PhotographersMulti-day conference coverage is a logistics job. The photographer needs to cover keynote sessions, breakaways, exhibition stands, networking and sponsor activations without missing the moments the sponsors are paying for.3
- 12Headshot PhotographersHeadshot photography has split in two. A straight corporate headshot is a fifteen-minute job on a plain background. Personal branding photography is a longer session producing a library of images for a website, LinkedIn and social content, and costs considerably more.8
- 13Product PhotographersProduct photography is priced per image or per batch rather than per hour, which makes it the easiest category to compare quotes in. Ecommerce work on a white background is the cheapest tier. Styled lifestyle product photography costs several times more.12
- 14Food PhotographersFood photography in South Africa serves restaurants, producers and packaging. Restaurant menu shoots are usually a half or full day on location. Advertising food work involves a stylist and costs considerably more.0
- 15Property PhotographersProperty photography is a volume business with fast turnaround. Most South African agents book a package covering interior and exterior stills, and increasingly add drone and a walkthrough video. Turnaround matters more than anything, listings go live within days.8
- 16Drone PhotographersCommercial drone work in South Africa is regulated by the Civil Aviation Authority. Flying a drone for any commercial purpose requires a Remote Pilot Licence and an operating certificate, and the rules on proximity to people, roads, airports and private property are strict and enforced. A licensed operator will show you paperwork without being asked.9
- 17Wildlife PhotographersWildlife photography commissions in South Africa fall into two groups: guided photographic safaris where the photographer takes clients out, and commissioned work for lodges, reserves and conservation organisations. Both are priced by the day plus expenses.14
- 18Sports PhotographersSports photography is booked by clubs, schools and event organisers. School sport and club fixtures are the bulk of the South African market, alongside road running, cycling and surfing events where photographers often sell directly to participants.6

- 22Travel PhotographersTravel and tourism photography serves lodges, guesthouses, tour operators and destination marketing. In South Africa this is often a multi-day booking covering property, food, activities and lifestyle in one shoot.16
- 23Studio PhotographersStudio portrait photographers work in a controlled space with professional lighting, which makes them the right choice when weather, consistency or a specific background matters. Many South African studios also handle passport and visa photographs.118

- 25Photo Booth HirePhoto booth hire is a common add-on at South African weddings, year-end functions and brand activations. Options range from a classic enclosed booth to open-air setups, mirror booths and 360-degree video booths.5
